As children of the 80s, we grew up with many great electronic products like calculators, home computers and audio equipment. These products came and went as time passed, replaced by better, faster, sleeker, more advanced and often cheaper versions. Some of these great products will always remain with us as fond memories.

In my teens, my parents gave me an Atari 800XL home computer for my birthday, and I loved it. After some time, I saved money to buy a secondhand Atari 1020 Pen Plotter that I picked up with my grandparents that I had convinced this is a must have addition. Four tiny colored ballpoint pens and a cheap roll of paper were all I needed to create dotted images, blocky text and curly lines. I remember writing my first ‘generative’ BASIC code to draw circles and lines in a repetitive manner. It was great fun, and looking back, it seems I had so much time to waste back then.

I guess this experience planted a seed because, 30+ years and many careers later, I came across a Roland professional pen plotter that was begging to be brought back to life and give it purpose. And thus, it began…

Well… that’s a story for another day, perhaps.
